What Happens to Good Prospects After They Stop Responding?

At most companies, not much.

More email, more phone calls, and eventually, nothing.

For Simon Mansell, it was $534,000 in new revenue in 30 days, from prospects who already said “not now.”

If your firm sells five-figure engagements and has a database of leads nobody is working, there may be revenue sitting in it right now.

A 20-Minute Dormant Revenue Review will tell you where to look first.

Book Your 20-Minute Dormant Revenue Review If I don't see anything there, I'll tell you that too.

The lead is already paid for. The trade show is already paid for. The first conversation, demo, or proposal may have already happened.

Then the prospect goes quiet.

Most companies respond with more email, more phone calls, and eventually, not much at all. Which makes me wonder how much revenue is sitting inside your database right now.

If you're like most firms I talk to, you have a few of these:

You've already paid to find those people. They already know something about you. What would give them a reason to talk again?

In my experience, the answer is rarely another email. More often it's the words your best customers use when they explain why they bought from you.

$534,000 in 30 Days From Prospects Who Had Never Bought

Simon Mansell's company sells high-ticket B2B equipment. When we started, he had more than 780 prospects who had shown interest at some point and never bought. Some had seen a demo, some had gotten a quote, and most had simply stopped answering.

We didn't send them another email. Instead, we mined the language his existing customers were already using, in reviews and on sales calls, and built a FedEx sales-letter campaign around it. Then we coordinated the letters with email, texts, and follow-up from his sales team, so every letter had a phone call behind it.

The results?

In 30 days, that one campaign produced $534,000 in new revenue. The return was more than 10X. Customer-acquisition cost came in at roughly half what he'd been paying Meta. And his team started booking five, six, even seven appointments a day.

“My teams came to me saying, ‘This is really working. We're getting 5, 6, 7 appointments a day.’ From that first project, we generated $534,000 in revenue in 30 days. The ROI was more than 10x.”
Simon Mansell, CEO, Artemis Distribution

There's a Software Example, Too

Mike Snuffer runs Modus Elections Software. His team had a list of target accounts that had stopped responding to email and phone calls, so we mailed 24 letters, written in the words his current customers use, and coordinated them with his team's follow-up.

Those 24 letters started conversations with a dozen of those accounts, led to 6 discovery calls, and put about $300,000 in his pipeline in 60 days. That's more than triple what he had before.

“We targeted 24 accounts, started conversations with 12 of them, and now have over $300,000 of revenue in our pipeline, more than triple what we had. All in about 60 days. It's been faster and more cost effective than we ever imagined.”
Mike Snuffer, Founder, Modus Elections Software

Both campaigns started with people the companies had already paid to attract.

Dormant Revenue Checklist

Check every group you can identify today. It takes about a minute, and it's the first thing we'd look at on your Review.

CHECK EVERY GROUP YOU CAN IDENTIFY TODAY:

Three questions worth answering:

How the Campaign Works

  1. We pick the group with the strongest reason to hear from you now. Usually that's the proposals that went quiet, or a trade-show list nobody worked.
  2. We write to them in the words your best customers already use. Those words come from your testimonials, case studies, and recorded sales calls. Nobody opens an AI tool and brainstorms them.
  3. The letters go out by FedEx or U.S. Mail, coordinated with email, texts, and your sales team's follow-up. The conversations restart warm, because the prospect just read a page that sounds like one of your customers talking.

You keep everything we build along the way: a Voice of The Buyer Cheat Sheet that shows why your customers buy in their exact words, a Voice of The Buyer Revenue Engine your team can use to write new letters, emails, and pages in that same language, and a Digital Focus Group of 30 buyer personas for testing ideas before you spend a dollar mailing them.

What the 20-Minute Review Is

We'll look at which prospects may still be a good fit, what a new customer is worth today, and the first group I'd test with a letter and coordinated follow-up. And if I don't see anything there, I'll tell you that too.

You'll leave with a first group to test, a rough size for it, and a number for what recovering a handful of them would be worth. There's nothing to prepare beyond the checklist above, and there's no presentation. It's a conversation about your database.

Who This Is For

This works best for established firms that sell high-value technology, consulting, advisory, or implementation services, where one lost customer is worth $25,000 or more in a year. At that level, the math is simple: recovering two or three prospects who went quiet pays for a campaign several times over, and the first one usually covers it. If you also have a CRM with past opportunities in it, testimonials or recorded sales calls we can mine, and a sales team to follow up, you've got everything the campaign needs.

Return on investment within 90 days, or your money back.

Who This Is Not For

I've turned down big projects for exactly these reasons, including companies whose testimonials didn't match the buyers they were chasing. If you have happy customers and a database of people who once wanted to talk, we've got enough to work with.

More Results From the Same Approach

“The first sales letter Kevin wrote for us we mailed for nearly 5 years and it helped us grow a retail chain from 9 locations to 44. I jokingly refer to it as ‘The $100-Million Letter’ because that's how much our annual revenue grew to as we expanded. He's been a trusted advisor to me on matters of marketing and strategy for over 10 years.”
Steve Adams, President, Tiger Medical Institute
“We mailed the letter Kevin wrote. It was our first time to send a direct-mail promotion like this to existing accounts already on the books. The results were pretty incredible: $77,098 in new revenues, with more to come by the end of the year. The return on investment for your services was off the charts!”
Jeff Prouty, Chairman and Founder, The Prouty Project
“We grossed $639,992 thanks to Kevin's FedEx sales letter, PowerPoint, and sales script. He's an expert at taking your marketing from good to great. If you get a chance to work with Kevin, take it!”
Darcy Juarez, The Team Training Institute

About Kevin Donlin

Kevin Donlin

Since 1998, I've built marketing campaigns for clients nationwide, with gains of over $1 million on multiple occasions. For the last several years I've worked on one problem: what happens to good prospects after they stop responding? The method that came out of it is called Voice of The Buyer Marketing, and it's the subject of my book by the same name.

Questions I Get Asked

How big does the list need to be?
Smaller than you'd think. Mike's campaign was 24 letters. What matters is that the people on it once had a real need and a real conversation with you. A few dozen of those beat a few thousand cold names.
What if we don't have testimonials?
Recorded sales calls work as well or better, and most firms have more of those than they realize. With a few happy customers, we can usually get what we need in a couple of conversations. If you have no customers yet, this isn't the right project, and I'll say so on the Review.
Who does the printing and mailing?
I do, start to finish, including any FedEx. Your team gets a copy of the letter, the email sequence, and a simple message map for the follow-up calls.
What does our sales team have to do?
Make the follow-up calls, using the message map, to people who just received a letter. In my experience that call can increase your response 50%. Because the letter turns cold calls into warm calls, even if they didn't read it.
What happens after the Review if there's something there?
We can decide to keep talking about next steps. If there isn't anything there, you'll leave with new insights and my recommendations. You're in control.
